Matthew 25 In Action: Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service & Book Review
More than thirty people gathered on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 16) for a morning of service. We were joined by five Elmira College students after they learned about our event. We assembled more than 200 disaster kits for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance in the morning. Participants from several area churches joined in as we put together the different kits. One was for school supplies, another kit was for hygiene, and the third was for cleanup.
While most of the people were assembling kits, there was a dedicated small group preparing lunch that included penne pasta, angel hair pasta with alfredo or marinara sauce. We also had fresh blueberries and strawberries in addition to a freshly baked apple crisp for dessert.
Although we still have to purchase some items for a few of the kits to make them complete, the morning was truly a success as we all got to know one another better. It is hoped that the Presbytery will be able to offer more of these social gatherings throughout the year.
