Tornado Destroys First Presbyterian Church of Rome

This week a tornado struck Rome and Canastota, NY within the Presbytery of Utica. Presbytery Leader Larry Beasley sent the message below concerning the details we pass on to the synod community. Please keep the church, Rome and Canastota in your prayers and consider ways your presbyteries, churches, or individuals can reach out and come to the First Presbyterian Church of Rome’s aid.

The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Rome and many buildings in the area were destroyed. The Christian Education wing of the church also sustained severe damage. Structural engineers are on the site assessing the extent of the damage and how safe the building is. Congregations of the Presbytery of Utica are rallying to assist FPC Rome.

What we know at the moment:

  • While the sanctuary was destroyed, there were no injuries reported.

  • The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army are on the scene organizing relief efforts. The Governor has also ordered a contingent of the National Guard to assist.

  • Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has been contacted. It appears that direct involvement isn’t (yet) necessary, but their resources can be accessed as needed.

  • The City of Rome has established an email address (Volunteer@romecitygov.com) for individuals who want to offer assistance.

  • The United Way of the Mohawk Valley has established a fund and a website for those who wish to make contributions to the relief efforts:https://www.unitedwaymv.org/tornado

Please keep the saints in Rome—and all the people of the city—in your prayers as they recover.
