Message from the Transitional Synod Leader: Dance, Sing, Play

Rabbinic tradition ascribes King Solomon as the writer of Ecclesiastes. These words come to us from a seasoned, elderly sage who shares his wisdom about life in his old age. Ecclesiastes 3 is one of the most commonly quoted passages from the book: "There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens." As I age, I find myself focusing on the saying, "There is a time to dance." Having the courage to dance is a leap of faith. It's challenging to dance when the world is in tears, but helping others transform their tears into laughter is Gospel work.

Several weeks ago, I shared with my husband my intention to dedicate the morning to making as many people smile as possible. We embarked on our day, and I made a conscious effort to greet each person we met with a smile, saying, 'Good morning,' 'Please,' or 'Thank you.' Just as my grandfather said, 'When you smile, the whole world smiles with you.' This is somewhat true, but some people, burdened with the vicissitudes of life, cannot muster the strength to exercise the 13 muscles needed to smile. This too is Gospel work. I especially look forward to the time when life will become easier for everyone.

William Carlos Williams said, "In summer, the song sings itself." In the well of my soul, I understand what Williams means. The warmth of the summer heat, though extreme at times, brings with it a sense of hope.

As we approach the rest of the summer and beyond, we hold steadfast to our mission and are filled with excitement about the future. The progress we've made so far is just the beginning, and we are eager to continue driving innovation and making a positive impact as we share in ministry with the larger synod community. I pray you will have time this summer to enjoy heart-nurturing moments with family and friends that fill your souls with praise.

We encourage everyone to stay connected with us and pray for the Discernment Team, our presbyteries, denomination, and country. Enjoy this beautiful season, and may it bring you joy and renewal.

A Prayer to Begin Summer

For more light in the day, we thank you,

For gentle mornings, we thank you,

For nighttime conversations, we thank you,

For friends and family, we thank you,

For gardens and all manner of creatures, we thank you.

Help us, Creator and lover of our souls.

Help us love this earth.

Help us dwell wholeheartedly in our lives this day.

Help us pray as we walk, work, play, rest, and create. Amen.  Vinita Hampton Wright
