Matthew 25 In Action: Preserving Sacred Spaces, Supporting Indigenous Communities
As part of our continued commitment to the Matthew 25 Initiative, the Synod of the Northeast invites you to join us for Indigenous Mission Day on Saturday, September 28, 2024. This day of service is an opportunity to lend a hand in preserving sacred spaces while supporting our indigenous brothers and sisters in faith, as we work to embody the call of Matthew 25.
A Day of Service and Solidarity
The Indigenous Mission Day will focus on two historic Native American churches—Brook Presbyterian Church in Hillburn, NY, and Shinnecock Presbyterian Church in Southampton, NY. These churches are not only places of worship but are also key cultural and spiritual centers for their respective communities. This event aligns with the three focus points of the Matthew 25 Initiative:
Building Congregational Vitality: By helping to beautify these sacred spaces, we support the ongoing spiritual vitality and community engagement of these indigenous congregations.
Dismantling Structural Racism: This event is an act of solidarity, recognizing the historic and systemic injustices faced by indigenous peoples. By walking alongside these communities, we acknowledge their struggles and commit ourselves to the work of reconciliation and justice.
Eradicating Systemic Poverty: Many indigenous communities face systemic challenges, including economic disparities. Through this service, we uplift these communities by maintaining their sacred spaces, supporting their cultural heritage, and building relationships rooted in respect and mutual support.
Historic Churches, Sacred Work
Brook Presbyterian Church: Located in Hillburn, NY, Brook Chapel is part of the community's deep history, offering a place for indigenous worship and gathering since its inception. It continues to serve as a pillar of faith and culture for the local Ramapough Lenape people. Learn more about the church's history here.
Shinnecock Presbyterian Church: In Southampton, NY, Shinnecock Presbyterian Church serves the Shinnecock Nation and has been a cornerstone of spiritual life for the community. This historic church has been a place of worship and resistance against colonization for centuries. Discover more about this sacred space here.
How You Can Help
Volunteers are needed to help with various beautification efforts at both churches. No experience is necessary—just a willing heart and caring hands! Your presence will not only help preserve these historic spaces but also show love, respect, and solidarity with our indigenous brothers and sisters. Whether through cleaning, gardening, or small repairs, your efforts will make a lasting impact.
